Travel Details

Valley City Wetland Management District (WMD) was established in 1971 to manage, restore, and protect habitat on public and private lands for all wildlife and for the use and enjoyment of all people. This District is one of 11 WMDs that help make up North Dakota's "duck factory," otherwise known as the Prairie Pothole Region.

Valley City WMD is located in east-central North Dakota and includes Cass, Traill, Barnes, Griggs, and Steele counties. It is made up of 82 Waterfowl Production Areas (WPAs) totaling approximately 17,000 acres, and also includes 55,400 acres protected by wetland easements, and four easement refuges totaling 5,500 acres. Aside from providing important nesting areas for several species of ducks, WPAs host a wide variety of other bird life including savannah and clay-colored sparrows, bobolinks, northern harriers, upland sandpipers, pied-billed grebes, and American avocets, just to name a few. Amphibians, such as leopard frogs and tiger salamanders, and mammals like red fox, white-tailed deer, and the occasional moose, also use these mini-refuges.

Directions

The District headquarters is located 2 miles northwest of Valley City along the Sheyenne River. From Interstate 94, take Valley City exit #292 to the north. You will be on 8th Avenue. Continue north, and take a right onto Main Street, heading east. Proceed approximately 7 blocks and take a left on Central Avenue, heading north. Proceed approximately 11 blocks and take a right on 12th Street, heading east. At the four-way stop, take a left, again heading north. Go north for approximately 3/4 of a mile. Take the first left after crossing the railroad tracks, heading northwest. Continue for approximately 1 mile and watch for the signs, turn south across the railroad tracks, and watch for a quick right to the headquarters.
